Leading architectural products manufacturer Hunter Douglas has returned to an award-winning office development in the heart of London to supply another of its premium ceilings as part of a refurbishment programme.
Cannon Place is a 389,000 sq ft office development above Cannon Street Station, in the City of London. Inspired by the design and engineering of the Forth Bridge, the building is famed for its cantilevered exo-structure that allows open plan office space on all eight floors with hardly any supporting columns.
Hunter Douglas supplied a wood grill ceiling in 2015 for a refurbishment on another floor and when floor 6 was to be revamped, the international supplier was specified once more to supply 450m2 of wood veneer grill ceiling to be fitted in the cafe area.
Working with Kent-based installation contractor Integra Contracts, Hunter Douglas fulfilled the brief to supply the veneer grill in European oak in 33mm x 100mm slat with a 77mm gap.
Juliette Halliday, National Sales Manager at Hunter Douglas, said: “The biggest challenge to the project was supplying the grill panels in the time needed because the deadline was very tight, but we made sure that we were able to deliver. The ceiling is now in situ and it is a great example of how wood veneer can work in a large space. The beauty of a grill system is that the panels can be produced in various widths and lengths to create a truly unique look.”
The Hunter Douglas wood veneer grill ceiling is also very easy to install and can be demountable, which allows services to be accessed easily.
Veneer wood grills are an environmental friendly option for building projects. They can be supplied with FSC/PEFC certification and modern production methods mean that between 800m2 and 1000m2 of veneer can be produced from just 1m3 of wood.
“Veneer grill ceilings offer architects a huge amount of design flexibility and they are also an excellent choice when a premium finish is needed on a tighter budget,” said Juliette.
Michael Trayfoot, Director of Integra, which was appointed installation contractor, said: “The Hunter Douglas wood grill veneer system is an excellent solution to timber slatted ceilings. The design of hook on panels has many advantages over individual linear slats as accessing the ceiling void is simple, which is a huge benefit to both the construction and maintenance phases of a project.”
